Formulating Percentages! I know, I know, right about now some of you are probably thinking you're going to break out in hives any second, math can do that to some of us, : ) but trust me, if I can do it, so can you and right now we'll walk through it step by step: Grab yourself a calculator, you're going to need one! This applies to all products, not just making lotion, so if you need to figure out how much lip balm base you need to make to fill your cute litle pots, this is how you do it. Let's say we want to formulate a lotion recipe, I want to make an eight ounce batch total to fill 2 four ounce containers, I'm going to use the following recommendations of ingredient %'s: Water: 70% Oil: 25% Emulsifying Wax: 5% Remember, we are making 8 ounces of lotion, so we need to turn those percent signs into decimal points by dividing by 100. 70% water becomes .70 (70/100) 25% oil becomes .25(25/100) 5% emulsifying wax becomes .05 (5/100) Now we need to figure out how much of each we need to create 8 ounces of lotion, to do that, we need to multiply: .70 (our water percentage turned decimal) x 8 (the amount in ounces we are making) =5.6 ounces of water .25 (our oil percentage turned decimal) x 8 (the amount in ounces we are making) = 2 ounces oil .05 x8 = .4 ounces of emulsifying wax Now we have a formula to make lotion: 5.6 ounces of water 2 ounces of oil .4 ounces of e-wax Now we have a recipe that equals 100% of our formula for 8 ounces of lotion (5.6+2+.4) = 8 ounces! woohoo! : ) Please help support our library and keep it running by donating today!
